Standard: ASTM C170 – Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Dimension Stone

Certification Required: N/A

Scope: Per ASTM C170: "This test method covers the sampling, preparation of specimens, and determination of the compressive strength of dimension stone."

Applicable Products: Dimension stone

Test Procedure: For testing in a dry condition, specimens are dried in an oven for at least 48 hours at 140 ̊F. Weights are recorded at the 46th, 47th, and 48thhours to ensure that the weight is the same. If the weights continue to drop then drying is continued until there are three successive hourly readings at the same weight. Specimens are then removed from the oven and allowed to cool to room temperature is a desiccator before testing. Additionally, specimens are also tested in a wet condition with a 48 hours water immersion prior to testing.

The load-bearing area of each specimen is calculated before testing. The specimen is then leaded into the testing machine and a compressive load is applied at a uniform rate not greater than 100psi/s. The load is applied until failure and the load at the failure point is recorded. This test is performed with the loading direction parallel to the rift as well as perpendicular to the rift.

End Result: This test results in the compressive strength perpendicular to the rift and parallel to the rift.
